Sustainability at Hedsor House

Our sustainability journey started many years ago as the conservation of Hedsor House’s Grade II listed grounds has been at the forefront of the Shephard family’s work. We continue to embody the ethos of our sustainably-minded director, Alexander Shephard, throughout our business and our weddings.

Over the last 30 years, 2,500 trees have been planted across the estate. These include important specimen Oaks, Wellingtonias, Beeches and Cedars of Lebanon. Many areas of the estate are left for rewilding, providing a rich habitat for wildlife and flora and fauna.

We have our wonderful Highland cattle onsite (nature’s lawnmowers!), plus honey bees who can work to pollinate and promote a biodiverse ecosystem on our estate.

Like many others we have made significant changes in the house and our office to ensure we are reducing our waste and working as sustainably as possible. And we have recently invested in solar panels and electric car charging points.

Green Touches

Sustainable Switches for your Wedding

What are Green Touches?

A ‘Green Touch’ is an eco-friendly tweaks that will help make your special day more environmentally friendly. They can be applied to all elements of your day, from production to catering, to deliver a more carbon-conscious wedding at no extra cost. These Green Touches carry the spirit of the Shephard family throughout our Wedding Packages.

Each of our Wedding Packages can be tweaked to incorporate sustainable elements into your day. With changes possible from all four package suppliers, even just a small amend could make a big difference to the carbon footprint of your wedding. These Green Touches aim to help couples who want a sustainable wedding that doesn’t compromise on luxury.

We’ve listed some of our favourite suggestions to inspire sustainable choices within the four suppliers of each package: catering, floristry, production and cake.

Carbon Offsetting

Offset your Wedding Emissions

Carbon offsetting means funding an activity that compensates for the emission of CO2 or other greenhouse gases. It could be activities such as tree planting or land restoration. The reason it’s possible is because climate change is a non-localised problem; greenhouse gases mix throughout the atmosphere, so reducing them anywhere contributes to overall climate protection.

If you would like to offset the carbon emissions from your wedding, we recommend using Ecologi, a company specialising in climate action projects.

While we cannot determine the exact emissions from your wedding, our research suggests that a typical wedding at Hedsor House is responsible for emitting 5-10 tonnes of CO2e. Additionally, for every couple that offsets their carbon emissions, we will match their donation as part of our long-term commitment to sustainability. Speak to your Wedding Specialist if you have chosen to offset your emissions.
